Conferencing enhances communication and teamwork

As the UK's second large mortgage and savings provider and one of the largest personal financial services companies, Abbey 'turned banking on its head' in 2003, with a new look and a commitment to making its range of personal finance services clearer and simpler.

Turning banking on its head is an ethos that Abbey has taken to heart with its internal communications too. After carrying out a project to identify ways to improve its communications infrastructure, Abbey turned to BT Conferencing to provide phone and video conferencing services. The portfolio provided has been customised to Abbey's requirements and is even branded in the bank's new corporate style.

The portfolio includes Abbey MeetMe, a reservationless conferencing tool that allows up to 20 people to work together at a moment's notice without making a reservation - saving travel time and encouraging instant decision-making. BT Conferencing also facilitates Abbey's corporate communications calls, which include high-profile investor relations events and press releases.

With over 25,000 employees in locations across the UK it can be a challenge it can be a challenge to ensure that people are working effectively as part of a broader team. BT Conferencing therefore worked closely with Abbey's internal communications team to create an ongoing communications strategy which educated Abbey people about the service and its benefits. This included the preparation of an intranet site where hints and tips documents and helpful material could be accessed.

The BT Conferencing team held two well-received information sessions for users at Abbey's main offices in London and Milton Keynes, promoting the service and answering questions from existing and new users alike.

All of Abbey's PAs have been pre-registered with MeetMe accounts to save time. Letters and welcome packs explained how the service could make the PAs' days easier, by reducing the need to arrange travel and book meeting venues. The bank is now looking at pre-registering other job functions.

Recognising the cost-saving the service produces by reducing business travel, Abbey is also talking to BT Conferencing about web conferencing, to discover how this could make its communications even more effective and help its people work together.
