No-one from Unilever had to jump on a plane or book into an expensive hotel when more than 400 deodorant division people from around the world attended a conference with their global category board - all from the comfort of their own desks.
The hour-long live web conference - called Half-Time Team Talk because it came just after the half-year results - took advantage of one of BT Conferencing's many solutions to enable the board to not only present to a global audience in real time but also host a live interactive question and answer session joined by colleagues in Latin America, Europe, Asia and North America.
Conferencing brought together 40 different countries in an instant; the first time a Unilever global category board had spoken to its entire community in this way. Commented one delegate in Chicago: "It was great to interact with the global brand directors. It's so much more powerful when you hear them talking spontaneously about the business issues."
Streaming, or webcasting, enables the transmission of audio and video files over Internet or intranet to any approved person with a PC and a web browser - saving on investment in additional hardware. Participants can either view the event live or, thanks to secure digital storage, log in at a later date to hear or see everything that they missed. Multiple presenters and presentations from around the world can be hosted and participants are able to vote on key issues to gauge understanding or gain feedback.
This makes it ideal for a huge range of scenarios, such as training sessions, sales seminars, team briefings and business presentations. The Unilever event was such a success that it was repeated six months later and will become a regular event to help global working and improve communications within the division.
